2017 Training, Workforce Development, and Diversity Program Directors’ Meeting


A goal of the NIGMS Division of Training, Workforce Development, and Diversity (TWD) is to create a community of trainers and educators dedicated to developing a well-prepared, diverse biomedical research workforce.

Toward that end, the focus of this year’s TWD Program Directors’ Meeting Exit icon is to continue to build and strengthen the partnerships and networks within the TWD community. The meeting, to be held June 18-21 in Baltimore, Maryland, will address the value of sustained networking among the grantees, students and other communities served by these programs. The meeting will enable program directors to learn more about other TWD programs; establish connections with potential new partners, especially regional “neighbors”; and collectively address the Institutes’ research training objectives.

Plenary sessions and keynote talks will cover the diversity of the U.S. research workforce, STEM training in the context of NIH-funded biomedical research, and innovative approaches for evaluating and assessing NIGMS/NIH training programs.

Poster sessions will provide an interactive forum for authors to discuss their NIGMS-funded program best practices, progress and outcomes.  Note: Abstracts for program poster sessions will be accepted on a first- come, first-served basis.  Space is limited.

The meeting is primarily intended for program directors and associate deans (or the equivalent) at institutions with these TWD student and predoctoral training programs: Bridges to the Baccalaureate, Bridges to the Doctorate, IMSD, IRACDA, IPERT, MARC T36, MARC U-STAR, RISE, PREPNIGMS T32 predoctoral programs and the NIH Enhancing Diversity of the NIH-Funded Workforce programs (NRMN, BUILD, CEC).


POSTER SESSIONS:  Call for TWD 2017 Program Abstracts ("Best Practices")

We encourage each of you to bring a poster regarding innovations in your training programs.  These posters will be displayed at various times throughout the meeting, and will be used to foster conversation among participants.  We ask the posters to, in some form, address the following:

 

  • Motivation (i.e., what problem you sought to address)
  • Approach (i.e., how you addressed the problem)
  • Outcomes (i.e., what happened, and how have you assessed the effectiveness of your approach)
  • Lessons learned (i.e., what have you learned, both positively and negatively that can be useful to others trying to do similar work)

We also encourage presenters to focus on issues of sustainability of and dissemination of your educational activities.

NOTE:  PIs of T32 supplements funded through the following funding opportunity announcements are expected to present posters:

TWD 2017 TRAVEL AWARDS AVAILABLE FOR T32 PROGRAM DIRECTORS

FASEB MARC is offering a limited number of TWD 2017 Travel Awards to help support the participation of Principal Investigators/Program Directors of active NIGMS TWD-funded T32 grants.  Each travel award covers eligible expenses up to a maximum of $1,200 to support the applicant’s participation in the TWD 2017 Program Directors’ Meeting.

The award must be applied to related expenses including travel (air and ground transportation), lodging at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel (the designated TWD 2017 meeting venue), TWD 2017 meeting registration and per diem allowance ($111.00) for dates of travel only.  

The travel awards will be processed as reimbursements to the award recipients after the meeting. Original receipts will be required in order to receive reimbursement.     NOTE:  Travel awards are limited to a maximum of three (3) NIGMS TWD-funded T32 Principal Investigators/Program Directors per university/institution.
