Program profiles
Research training programs, one by one
Each profile says what the program was built to do, who it served, which grant mechanism it used and where it stands today. Several well-known programs were renamed, merged or ended between 2019 and 2026, so every page carries a status line and the date we last checked it.

- What changed in NIGMS training programs, 2011 to 2026 A dated timeline of how NIGMS training and diversity programs were merged, renamed, restructured and in many cases ended, from 2011 to late 2026.
- Active BURT, the Biomedical Undergraduate Research Training program (T34) NIGMS's current undergraduate training grant. For institutions averaging under $50 million a year in NIH research project grants, with a community college track.
- Active TURTLE, the Tribal Undergraduate to Graduate Research Training and Leadership Experiences program A phased NIGMS award made to Tribes, Tribal colleges and Tribal organizations, building their own research training programs for undergraduates and PhD students.
- Active NIGMS predoctoral T32 training grants The core NIGMS PhD training grant. Applications move to the Parent T32 in January 2027, regrouped from 12 specialized areas into 8 broad ones.

Questions people ask
Why do so many program pages say the program ended?
Between 2019 and 2026 NIGMS restructured its undergraduate and graduate programs, and in 2025 many diversity-focused training awards were terminated. We keep pages for those programs because program directors, alumni and students still search for them, and because the history matters when you read old reports or CVs.
How current is the status information?
We last checked each program against NIGMS and NIH Guide pages in November 2026. Funding policy has changed quickly, so confirm anything important with the current funding opportunity on grants.nih.gov before you plan around it.
