What was the 2017 PPI?
The 2017 Postdoctoral Preparation Institute was a two-day seminar on August 10–11, 2017 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, for postdocs and advanced graduate students about to look for their first independent position. It followed the 2016 institute in Bethesda.
Who could take part?
The call was open to postdoctoral researchers and to advanced graduate students who would soon be on the job market. It emphasized members of groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences without limiting participation to them. Applications were due July 9, 2017. Selected participants paid a small reservation fee, and travel awards were offered to eligible participants.
What was on the program?
The structure was similar to 2016, with one addition that stood out: "Reality Ph.D." sessions in which postdoc peers described their own career moves. Other sessions covered:
- career options for PhD scientists in policy, writing, intellectual property, industry, consulting and entrepreneurship, academia, science education, nonprofits and government
- choosing a career and finding an institution that fits
- applying, interviewing and negotiating a startup package
- networking, and balancing research with other commitments
